Musick Most Dark Updates

It’s been way too long between entries, and not because we’ve nothing to say. Quite the contrary, in fact. There’s the Emily White firestorm (links, our thoughts coming soon), a new Rush album (tl;dr: it’s awesome. Go buy it. Even you, Emily), and new Valentine Wolfe songs…cause, you know, nothing motivates like a deadline.

Seriously, though…we thought we had Music Most Dark finished, but…in a flurry of activity, we’ve got a bunch of new songs in the foundry. Add the score for Twelfth Night (speaking of which, the source material appeared tonight. It’s like Ravel said-the score is done, we only lack the themes for it), and well, yeah…this is what we’re doing on our summer vacation.

And what does this music sound like? Well, had I a looper pedal with considerably more flexibility, probably quite differently than much of it sounds now. We’ve gotten more into layering the double bass (oddly, Sarah’s idea, not mine…I’d resisted the notion for awhile, but I’ve seen the light).

And bowed bass distortion…yeah, that’ll clean up your bow arm, and fast.

Mostly, we’ve been thinking about re-scoring much of what we’d written to make our backing tracks…well, more backing tracks. This is what we learned from Merchant of Venice, both for ourselves and based on the feedback we’d gotten. Mostly, I think the idea now is to get to the point were when we play live, Sarah’s voice, the kick drum, and then my sound should dominate the texture. Sometimes, I’d say this isn’t quite the best way to mix us.

I’d even toyed with the idea of buying an amp, but to replicate the current Wolfe mix, I’d have to spend several thousand dollars. However, I’d still love to see what an Orange tube amp slightly overdriven would sound like. Hmm…maybe more sonic experiments are in order!

Oh yes, before I forget: here’s some track by track info for Music Most Dark (we still may spell music with a k at the end, still not sure).

We’re sure these are making the CD:

  • La Cantarella
  • Reliquary of Thorns
  • You’re Not an Angel
  • A Thousand LIttle Deaths
  • Disarticualtion

We’re pretty sure about these, but there might be a new track that displaces them:

  • Darkest Night of Winter
  • Edge of Unreason
  • Black Rose, Part 3
  • Untitled, formerly a Little Gift of Untimely Death

We’re working on these:

  • Gaslight Caprice
  • The Fairy’s Kiss
  • Black Rose/White Rose parts 1 and 2 (working title).
  •  a Little Gift of Untimely Death-Ima make it a dark cabaret song.

And there’s a couple of more floating around…so stay tuned, and catch us live sometime…you’ll get to hear most of these!
